P: The Story about Ping

P: The Story about Ping

Welcome! The following is the 16th in a series of 24 lesson plans, Learning the ABC’s through Literature, the 1st year. It was written especially for classroom use within a homeschool co-op, and was designed to teach the alphabet, over the course of a school year, using classic childrens literature. The books are primarily taken from the Five in a Row Curriculum by Jane Lambert, with several others added as well.  The plans were designed to give just a little bit more, so it could be more usable within a classroom setting. Teachers questions, printables, craft ideas, classroom handouts, etc are included within all the lessons. This is geared towards a K-1st grade class. If you are interested in something similar for older children, the Learning through Literature series is a more developed concept of this same idea, geared towards 1st-3rd, and also uses mostly Five in a Row books. You can find it here, Learning through Literature, the 2nd year.

What Letter are we on?
Letter P for “Ping”
“Ni Hao” “Hi Hao Ma?”  Today our story takes place in China. Show
China Jacket. Does anyone have any idea where China is? *East
What continent is China on? *Asia. Lets review our
continents.
Story about a young duck named Ping. Thinks that it is
better to go out into the world than to face the discipline from his master.
*do you ever get punished for something you do or don’t do?
*does it make you not want to do that thing anymore? Don’t spank a lot… but one
thing my kids have always gotten spanks for is for going too close to the road.
Is this something harsh? No it is teaching … a little spank is going to remind
you the road HURTS, and this little hurt will serve as a reminder to stay out
of the road and avoid a BIG hurt.
Setting of our story: In China, on the Yantze River. 3rd
longest river in the world. Almost 4000 miles long. That is 1000 miles longer
than the distance from Florida to Washington State. About the distance from the
top of Florida to the bottom of Alaska. It is Big. It is called Yangtze – chang
jiang which means “long river”
Why do you think this river is important? *move things by
boat, transporation, water, food, silt deposits (good rice farming)
