Review:

Who remembers where our story took place last week?
(Ungava Bay, Canada). We read about Eva’s Very Last First Time going by herself
under the ice in the Ungava Bay. Who can find Canada on the map? Can anyone
remember where the Ungava Bay is?

Introduce Today’s Story/Basic Geography:

Our story today takes place in the United States … but in a state that
is very close to Canada. Let’s find Maine on the map. See if the students can use directionals (north/south/east/west) to locate Maine on the map in relation to your state

         Has anyone been to Maine?
Do we know anything about Maine?
Even if we don’t know much about Maine, what can
we guess by seeing its spot on the map
·
(further north, further away from the Equator,
close to the North Pole – therefore probably colder than VA)
Lots of lakes. Mountains and forests. Lots and lots of forests. Four seasons, but winters and summers much cooler than in the southern part of the United States. When it snows, the snow lasts all
the way until April. And they have summer just like us – but their summer is
also a lot cooler. See if the students can make climate comparisons with where they live. In Maine, summer is comfortable, nice. 70 or 80 degrees. And with
all those lakes, many people travel to Maine or go visit a lake during the
summertime.  The author of our  book seems like he spent a lot of time in
Maine. Can we remember any other books that took place in this area (Miss Rumphius, Make Way for Ducklings (Boston, Mass but still located in New England area)

Pre-Reading Discussion

Co-op … almost done. It is spring…
·
but what comes after spring? (Summer!)
·
What do you do in the summer? (vacation, lakes,
oceans, go outside)
Our book today starts in the spring. Now,
back when this book was written … they didn’t have video games, or TV’s. So
when it was summer … what do you think they did? (They went outside. They
didn’t just go outside, they explored every single details of outside. So as I
am reading the story… see if you can picture in your mind some of the things he
is describing.

Handwriting Sheet

Summer
– is a time of wonder. A special time filled with memories and joyful things
and time spent together with people you love. It’s a time you can’t really ever
duplicate again. But a special time. But you know what? This year – our co-op
year… is kinda of like a “Time of Wonder” After this year, you guys are never
going to be Kindergartener’s again. You’ve had lots of joyful memories this
year. You’ve had lots of fun times together.

·
Have you had fun this year?
·
Do you like coming to co-op?
·        What are your favorite things about co-op?

So for today, I want you to draw a picture. You can use
markers, glue, special scissors or tape or stickers or paper … and I want you
to draw a picture of some of your favorite things about co-op. It can be your
friends. It can be lunchtime. It can be playing games at the gym. If you know
how to write, you can fill in the sentence, “I love co-op because …. “
